چکیده

The structure of an optimal adaptive array receiver for ground-based optical communications is described and its performance investigated. Kolmogorov phase screen simulations are used to model the sample functions of the focal-plane signal distribution due to turbulence and to generate realistic spatial distributions of the received optical field. This novel array detector concept reduces interference from background radiation by effectively assigning higher confidence levels at each instant of time to those detector elements that contain significant signal energy and suppressing those that do not. A simpler suboptimum structure that replaces the continuous weighting function of the optimal receiver by a hard decision on the selection of the signal detector elements also is described and evaluated. Approximations and bounds to the error probability are derived and compared with the exact calculations and receiver simulation results. It is shown that, for photoncounting receivers observing Poisson-distributed signals, performance improvements of approximately 5 dB can be obtained over conventional single-detector photoncounting receivers, when operating in high background environments.

Analysis of adaptive optics-based telescope arrays in a deep-space inter-planetary optical communications link between Earth and Mars

Earth-based telescope array receivers employing optical communications have the potential to fulfill the communication needs of technologically sophisticated, deep-space exploration missions. Atmospheric turbulence is the chief restrictive factor in an optical deep-space channel (ODSC). In this paper, investigation and design of adaptive optics (AO) subsystems are presented for the compensation...

Digital equalization of time-delay array receivers on coherent laser communications.

Field conjugation arrays use adaptive combining techniques on multi-aperture receivers to improve the performance of coherent laser communication links by mitigating the consequences of atmospheric turbulence on the down-converted coherent power. However, this motivates the use of complex receivers as optical signals collected by different apertures need to be adaptively processed, co-phased, a...

Power Amplifier Linearization Using Six-port Receiver for DVB-S2 Satellite Communications

A digital look-up table adaptive predistortion technique using a six-port receiver for power amplifier linearization is presented. The system is designed in Ka-band for a DVB-S2 satellite link. We use a six-port receiver at the linearizationloop in place of classic heterodyne receivers. The six-port receiver is implemented by the use of passive microwavecircuits and detector diodes. This approa...

Space-time Equalization with Smart Antenna and Hard Limiter Receiver

Both, adaptive antenna arrays for ISI cancellation and non-linear hard limiter receivers are well known as key technologies for high data rate low-cost receivers [1][2]. However, the combination of both technologies is a big challenge since non-linear receivers only provide phase or frequency samples. The amplitude information, which is required for the adaptation of the antenna array, is not a...

Comparison of ScintSim1 and Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation codes for optical photon transport in thick segmented scintillator arrays

Introduction: Arrays of segmented scintillation crystals are useful in megavoltage x-ray imaging detectors for image-guided radiotherapy. Most previous theoretical studies on these detectors have modelled only ionizing-radiation transport. Scintillation light also affects detector performance. ScintSim1, our previously reported optical Monte Carlo code for such detector...
